Further maths is a subject for students who are exceptionally good mathematicians and should be seen as a progression from mathematics A level rather than a discrete subject in its own right. The subject builds on the skills and knowledge learned in mathematics A level.
It is important and in some cases, essential for students who wish to study maths, physics or engineering at university to take further mathematics in order to demonstrate they have a strong command of mathematics. Students with maths and further maths should be careful when making university choices to ensure that the universities they apply to will consider them as separate A levels and that they have sufficient breadth from their other A level subject to meet the entry requirements for the course they intend to take.
